How to Compare Two PDFs and Find Every Difference (Free)
Someone sends you a "final" contract, an updated invoice, or revision 7 of a report — and you need to know exactly what changed. Reading both documents line by line is slow and error-prone. PdfWord's free Compare PDFs tool does the tedious work for you: it renders every page of both documents and shows them side-by-side, scores each page pair for similarity, and highlights every visible difference in red.
Unlike desktop software that costs money or online services that make you upload sensitive files, PdfWord runs entirely in your browser. Your contracts, financial statements, and legal documents never leave your device — which makes this the safest way to compare confidential PDFs online.
Steps: compare two PDFs in under a minute
- Upload PDF A (the original) — drop it on the first upload box or click to browse your files.
- Upload PDF B (the revised version) — same thing on the second box. The Compare button activates once both files are loaded.
- Click "Compare PDFs" — every page pair renders side-by-side with a similarity score (e.g. "98.2% identical"). Pages scroll together so you can scan visually.
- Switch views to investigate: use Overlay to blend page B over page A with an opacity slider (misaligned text jumps out immediately), or Diff highlights to see every changed pixel glowing red. Zoom in for fine print, use Prev/Next to jump between pages.
- Download the diff report — one click builds a PDF containing every highlighted page and its score, perfect for sharing with a colleague or client.

Three ways to spot changes
1. Side-by-side. The default view places page 1 of A next to page 1 of B, then page 2 next to page 2, all the way down. Because both columns scroll together, your eyes catch anything that moved, grew, or disappeared. This is the fastest way to review short documents.
2. Overlay blend. Page B is drawn directly on top of page A at adjustable opacity. Identical content looks normal; anything that shifted or changed appears doubled or ghosted. Overlay is the secret weapon for catching tiny edits — a changed date, a swapped figure, a moved signature line.
3. Diff highlights. The tool compares the two page renders pixel by pixel and paints every difference red while fading identical content. Each page gets a similarity score, so you can skip the 100% pages and focus only on the ones that changed.
Tips for the best results
- Compare the right pair. Make sure A is truly the older version — the similarity scores and highlights assume B is the revision.
- Watch for false positives. Scanned PDFs or documents printed from different software can show tiny anti-aliasing differences. The tool ignores minor noise, but if two pages score 99%+, the "differences" are usually rendering artifacts, not real edits.
- Different page counts are fine. If the revised PDF added or removed pages, the tool compares the shared pages and clearly marks which pages exist in only one document.
- Large documents take a moment. For speed, the tool compares the first 20 pages. For very long documents, split them into sections first with the free Split PDF tool.
